This data is a sample from the National Active Mode Count Database, which contains data from over 400 permanent continuous pedestrian and bicycle count sites across the country.

The sample represents the busiest count sites in Auckland, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, and Wellington.

We are working to publish the full dataset from the National Active Mode Count Database.

Examples for how to use this data include (but aren't limited to):

understanding walking and cycling use and patterns improving methods for estimating demand planning and design based on evidence of success (eg increase in walking and cycling counts over time).

Data reuse caveats: The data comes from the busiest count site in each city, ie there is only one count site per city represented.

Data quality statement: The quality of the dataset is average. The data quality varies for each count site.

Data quality caveats: Technology failures, loss of cellular service or environmental factors may result in missing data or big spikes in counts.

Councils can validate and reconstruct the data to address errors. However, this is not yet a standard practice across the country, therefore spikes and gaps in the data still exist.

Before aggregating the data, check for outliers or missing data, as these errors will affect analysis.Other metadata: n/a.
