Freshwater Eel Statistical Areas

General Statistical AreasLegal definitions for statistical areas (001 to 052) were sourced from the legally authoritative definition given on Map 9: General Statistical Areas. The boundaries for statistical areas 005, 006, 007, 009H, 043 and 044 are defined in the Fisheries (Auckland and Kermadec areas commercial fishing) Regulations, 1986. Ambiguity exists as to the precise nature of the boundary between statistical areas 016 and 017 through Cook Strait. This boundary has been drawn following the boundary depicted on Map 9.The boundaries for statistical areas 091 to 801 are defined in the map “Proposed Statistical Areas for New Zealand EEZ”, created in December, 1989. Ambiguity exists with regards to the diagonal boundaries forming parts of statistical areas 101, 302, 303, 504, 603, 604, 605, 606, 701 and 801. These parts of the boundaries have been constructed according to the Fisheries Management Area (FMA) boundaries listed in Schedule 1 of the Fisheries Act 1989, with special consideration to Note 4; Mercator 41 was the projection system used to create these lines. All boundaries have been generalised where they reach the coastline. The outer New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) boundary used to created these statistical areas was sourced from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).Freshwater Eel Statistical AreasThe legal definition of Freshwater Eel statistical areas are maintained by the Fisheries Management group. The defined areas are based on water catchment boundary definitions and the certified maps are based on and referred to by their North Island Freshwater Eel Statistical Area boundary names. The Freshwater Eel statistical areas layer has been created from the independent legal descriptions of each area. This layer is dependent on an authoritative layer depicting the EEZ boundary. Approximate co-ordinates contained within the legislation and certified maps defining the Freshwater Eel statistical areas boundaries were used. These co-ordinates are not authoritative, but are considered accurate for most purposes. These co-ordinates were plotted and used to construct the boundaries of the Freshwater Eel statistical areas.Oyster Statistical AreasLegal definitions for all Oyster statistical areas were sourced from the Certified Statistical area maps held in Ministry for Primary Industries legal document safe. The Statistical area maps for Oysters are:Map 3: Nelson Marlborough Scallop and Dredge Oyster Statistical AreasMap 4: Chatham Islands Scallop and Dredge Oyster Statistical AreasMap 5: Foveaux Strait Dredge Oyster Statistical AreasAn authoritative coastal boundary of these statistical areas is dependent on the "mean high water mark". An accurate digital version of the mean high water mark for New Zealand does not exist at this stage. This information layer is considered reasonably accurate but not authoritative.Paua Statistical AreasLegal definitions for all Paua statistical areas were sourced from the Certified Statistical area maps held in Ministry for Primary Industries legal document safe. The Statistical area maps for Paua are Maps 11, 11a – k, m – n, p – v: Paua Statistical Areas. The seaward boundary of these areas is ambiguously defined, and for the purposes of mapping, has been assessed as being 30 km from the coast or at the intersection with another boundary statistical area boundary. An authoritative coastal boundary of these statistical areas is dependent on the "mean high water mark". An accurate digital version of the mean high water mark for New Zealand does not exist at this stage. This information layer is considered reasonably accurate but not authoritative.Rock Lobster Statistical AreasLegal definitions for all Rock Lobster statistical areas were sourced from the Certified Statistical area maps held in Ministry for Primary Industries legal document safe. The Statistical area map for Rock Lobster is Map 6: Rock Lobster Statistical Areas. The seaward boundary of these areas is ambiguously defined, and for the purposes of mapping, has been appriximated to 30 km from the coast. An authoritative coastal boundary of these statistical areas is dependent on the "mean high water mark". An accurate digital version of the mean high water mark for New Zealand does not exist at this stage. This information layer is considered reasonably accurate but not authoritative.Scallop Statistical AreasLegal definitions for all Scallop statistical areas were sourced from the Certified Statistical area maps held in Ministry for Primary Industries legal document safe. The Statistical area maps for Scallops are:Map 1: Northland Scallop Statistical AreasMap 2: Hauraki - Great Barrier - Bay of Plenty Scallop Statistical AreasMap 3: Nelson Marlborough Scallop and Dredge Oyster Statistical AreasMap 4: Chatham Islands Scallop and Dredge Oyster Statistical AreasMap 10: West Coast Scallop Statistical AreasAn authoritative coastal boundary of these statistical areas is dependent on the "mean high water mark". An accurate digital version of the mean high water mark for New Zealand does not exist at this stage. This information layer is considered reasonably accurate but not authoritative.OYU5 (Foveaux Strait) Fishery GridBluff Oyster fishery grid for use in fishery reporting under Part "2H: Dredging" of the "Fisheries (E-logbook Users Instructions and Codes) Circular (No.2) 2018". A map of the grid is shown in Schedule 3, Part 1 of the Circular. The grid has spacing of 1 Nautical Mile (~1.85km).Sub-statistical areas for freshwater eelsSub-statistical areas for use in fishery reporting under Part "2D: Potting" of the "Fisheries (E-logbook Users Instructions and Codes) Circular (No.2) 2018". A map of the grid is shown in Schedule 3, Part 2 of the Circular. The boundaries have been generalised and are intended to follow river catchments or sub-catchments.
