This is a lecture given in 2011 at UoA to a group of doctoral students from Thailand. It covers basic principles of defining a construct, operationalising it, and validating it. It is illustrated with processes used in the development of a Chinese Student Conceptions of Assessment inventory, published in 2016 by Brown and Wang in Social Psychology of Education.
