Waka Kotahi open data update - November-December 2021

As part of improving how we engage with our open data users, we'll be releasing monthly updates highlighting some of the previous month’s work, as well as what we’re up to next.

Open data at Waka Kotahi – update, Nov-Dec ‘21

NZ Government is a signatory to the International Open Data Charter and New Zealand Data and Information Management principles, which follow from the (NZ) Declaration on Open and Transparent Government. Additionally, the Transport Evidence Base Strategy highlights improved access to data – and open data – as a key priority.

What we did (high-level) Republished procurement tool indexes.

We moved the infrastructure and public transport contract price adjustment indexes off the nzta.govt.nz website and on to the open data portal, as part of wider work to consolidate our open data.

Completed public consultation on open data framework.

Completed public consultation on sector-wide open data framework and high-level principles, along with agreed actions. The framework will enable the entire sector to align efforts, prevent wheel reinvention, improve maturity etc Next steps are to finalise and publish, ideally in Feb ‘22.

We ran a second, expanded internal* DataHack event, in which teams self-assemble around a chosen challenge, and also tried a new format. The event was highly successful with some great initiatives. This year, we’ll continue to hold and expand the event.

Updated data.govt.nz listings.

The federation between our open data portal and data.govt.nz has been experiencing problems. However, data.govt.nz has now performed a backend update which has repaired the issue and updated our listings on data.govt.nz.

Contributed poster Transport Knowledge Conference.

We contributed a poster on open data to the Transport Knowledge Conference. Posters will be published soon, and recordings of some of the presentations are available now.

This month’s fun fact: 1,475 - visits and 602 unique users on public consultation for open data framework.
